APPLICATION FORM - 2008

If you would prefer, click here to print out an application form to complete later

INTRODUCTION for summer 2008

The world of science, engineering and technology is diverse and challenging.  Headstart courses help you make more informed choices as you take the first steps toward an exciting and rewarding career.

WHO CAN APPLY?

Students in Yr 12 or Scottish Yr 5 who want to make an informed choice about technology-based subjects.  Some courses concentrate on a single discipline, Insight courses and Dragonfly modules are designed for young women, and all students from ethnic minorities will want to know more about Spectrum modules.

WHICH COURSE IS RIGHT FOR ME?  What’s Focus? Insight? Dragonfly? Spectrum?

If you are unsure whether a science or engineering degree is for you, our broad-based courses will be most suitable.  If you prefer to concentrate on one particular discipline, we have a range of Focus courses: subjects include aerospace, civils, electronics, computing, mechanical, materials, chemical and systems.

Science courses are designed for those planning a scientific career and Insight is designed for girls who prefer to study in an all-female environment.  Where an Insight course runs concurrently with others, social activities or cultural visits may be taken together.

Participants may be eligible for the BA Crest Award (Silver level) and those staying on for Dragonfly and Spectrum as Team Leaders or Mentors automatically gain the Crest Science Communicators Award.

Dragonfly modules offer girls an opportunity to stay on for an extra day to help as role models for younger students from local schools.  Spectrum also extends the course by a day, giving all students from ethnic minorities a chance to show younger pupils the importance of diversity in the workplace.

HOW CAN HEADSTART HELP?

>> by introducing several different branches of science, engineering and technology

>> by providing hands-on experience of real practical problems

>> by identifying sources of funding and support

>> by showing what it’s like to study for a degree at university

>> by helping you decide which university to apply for and explaining different career routes

YOU CAN REGISTER FOR A PLACE via the Headstart website.  Register online then download the rest of the Application Form for parents and teachers to complete before sending it back to us.  Successful applicants will be notified in March and required then to pay the course fee (amount is shown as part of the course code).  Please ensure you provide five options – we need these in case your preferences are full.

APPLICATION FORMS must be with Headstart before 1st March of the course year.  Locations, dates and features are provisional, so check the website for changes in December.  Any Offer of a place will confirm dates and the university will provide Joining Instructions 3 to 4 weeks before the start.  Offers are mailed to successful applicants during March of the course year.

YOU ARE REQUIRED TO PAY a course fee and travel costs there and back.  The fee is shown as the numeric part of the course code: e.g. CAR/195 shows the cost to attend Headstart at Cardiff is £195.  All accommodation costs are included in the fee.  Financial assistance is available for families receiving income support and some schools will help with the fee or travel expense.  You should ask at school if appropriate.

PAYMENT IS REQUIRED if we send you an Offer.  It must then be paid by cheque, or online at the Headstart website.  If you require financial assistance to attend let us know with your Application.
